Shifting Gender Norms for Thriving Families: WEE Hub Hosts One-Day Workshop in Machakos
The African Women Studies Centre (AWSC), WEE Hub, hosted a one-day workshop in Machakos titled “Shifting Gender Norms on Unpaid Care and Domestic Work.” Held under the theme “When men support women in unpaid care and domestic activities, families thrive,” the workshop brought together participants of both genders and varied ages from both Machakos and Matuu.
The workshop aimed to raise awareness on the importance of redistributing unpaid care and domestic responsibilities, and to encourage men’s active involvement in these roles. Through open dialogue, shared experiences, and practical reflections, participants explored how shifting gender norms can strengthen family wellbeing and promote gender equality at home and in society.
This engagement builds on WEE Hub’s ongoing efforts to support care infrastructure, including the establishment of childcare centres in both Machakos and Matuu. These centres serve as vital community resources, enabling women to pursue economic opportunities while ensuring safe, nurturing spaces for their children.
The workshop was a resounding success.
